Shirley leaves from an unstable home to school. She is constantly fighting at school. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she responds – I want to be a pediatrician, I love children and I want to help them. Why can’t you pursue your dreams, Shirley? She responds – I can’t, I am not that smart; no one in my family goes to college. I’m really not looking forward to graduating from High School, my future is so uncertain.

Christie is really smart, but she has so much going on. Her mum is sick and her dad is absent. She wants to become a lawyer, but that is a far-fetched dream. She doesn’t know any close relations who finished college. She is pregnant now and she is uncertain about her and her baby’s future.

Tammy is 15 and in 9th grade and her father won’t let her continue school. He wants her to start contributing financially. He can’t wait for her to turn 18 so that he would no longer be responsible for her welfare. She wants to be a media personality but she doesn’t even know how to get there given the circumstance she is dealing with.

More of these stories exist in our communities. Merely providing Information is no longer enough! These girls know they can succeed but how do they do so when faced with limiting circumstances and images? We need to go beyond providing information to building role model relationships that encourage them to pursue their dreams and support them by providing resources that foster critical thinking and the independent problem-solving skills that are so pertinent to succeeding in today’s professional landscape. LeadHer would push them further towards achieving those dreams, and by so doing, enhance the progress of our society.

LeadHer exists for girls such as those described above, to

–          provide guidance

–          provide resources

–          encourage these girls to break limits through education and mentorship

–           Afford these girls a chance to pursue their dreams and be full contributors to society

LeadHer believes that when the girl child is empowered to break limits, she is equipped to help the next generation. When we recognize the value these girls are capable of bringing to the table, then we will understand that inaction is not an option.
