Tell Us About Yourself (Including Hobbies, Fun Facts Etc.)

“I was originally born in Minneapolis Minnesota and spent the first three years of my life being raised in St. Paul Minnesota in an area called the Midway. Later moving to Des Moines, Iowa, where majority of academic journey took place.

While in Iowa, I learned how to play piano even though now I can only remember two songs which are ‘Jingle bells’ and ‘Thank you Lord’.

Right before high school my family moved back to my mother’s hometown of Houston, Texas, to help take care of her ailing godmother.

I was entering high school and I choose to attend my mother and her sibling’s high school alma-mater: Philips Wheatley Sr. High School. While at Wheatley I was a part of many clubs and organizations such as JROTC, which I held the Battalion commander position. In my last two years at Wheatley, by doing, I become the first junior in Wheatley JROTC to hold the position as a junior keeping the position until graduation; the Battalion Commander position is only given to a senior who show strong leadership skills.

I was also a part of  Business Professionals of America where I served as president for two years, and National Honor Society just to name a few. I graduated Wheatley in 2019 in the top ten percent, holding down the number 7 position.

After graduation I attended Prairie View A&M University with goals and ambitions to become a Paediatric Nurse

While there, I changed my major from nursing to health in the midst of the pandemic after needing more time to retake the HESI Exam and take some more classes before transitioning to the nursing school downtown.

Even though I changed my major,  I still have goals to be a Paediatric nurse. I graduated from PVAMU with a BS in Health while at PV, I was a part of National Honor Society of Success and leadership and in my final year, I joined P.A.H.P.E.R.D.

Since Graduating I am currently applying to Houston Community College to become an Ultrasound Technician while I continue to study to retake the HESI Exam and prepare myself for nursing school.

What Inspired You To Pursue A Career In Nursing?

“What inspired me to pursue a career in nursing was I remember how the nurses would make me feel when I would go to the doctor to change my cast

I was born with both my feet club. I was in cast for the first 7 1/2 years of my life. Each time I would go for a cast change, I would freak out and the nurses would always calm me down.

As I got older and started thinking of careers I wanted to pursue, I remember those moments from my childhood and knew nursing was the fit for me and I wanted to help a child in what can seem like  a scary experience less scary. While also helping to take adequate care of those kids such as the nurses did for me.

Can You Share Any Obstacles You Faced During Your Program And How You Overcame It?”

The obstacles I faced in the program was having to take courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Which in turn I ended up failing an important class needed for nursing school. Instead of feeling totally defeated I retook the class with this “I hit the ground running”.  I studied harder than before, used multiplemwebsites to help me retain knowledge in the course. I even stayed after class when the professor would hold extra credit and further knowledge help.

Can You Share Any Memorable Experience Or Moment In Your Time At PVAMU?

A memorable experience from my time at PVAMU was when they had Bingo Night after a week of study. My friends and I decided to attend Bingo Night in order to unwind from studying which I really did not want to attend and wanted to continue to sit in my dorm and study for Chemistry. This was one of the best ideas we had, freshman year. They had free food and was a great way to network with other students and learn the campus. I even won some prizes that I ended up using to help me study and keep track of classes.

What Advice Would You Give To Current High Schools Student Considering A Career In Nursing?

The advice I would give to current high school student considering a career in nursing is start building study habits that fits for you, start studying for your HESI Exam early on, do not be afraid to ask for help when needed, and lastly, sometimes you may have to go the nontraditional route and there is nothing wrong with having a plan B.
